5/28/25 New in the studio, Around Again, 2025, 24x24”, Oil & Charcoal on Panel. You can almost feel the rotation, and the square edges of the ground fall away. I also love that solid, assertive negative space shape that has its own gravity & competes with the repeated figures. Available

4/30/25 Here it is, the completed HalfAwakeStillDreaming, 2025, 53.5” diam, Oil & Charcoal on Hinged Panel. Designed to hang on the wall or transition from wall to floor or tabletop. Available

4/28/25 Two more sneak peek images of the new painting, HalfAwakeStillDreaming. Enjoy the amuse bouche - the complete painting following shortly...…

4/22/25 A sneak peek at the wip Half Awake Still Dreaming in the studio. On a round, hinged panel, the piece is designed to either hang on the wall or transition from floor or tabletop to wall. More info shortly...

3/15/25 New Sleepers Series piece, fresh from the studio - Sleeper #7 (Passing By Unnoticed), 2025, 25x49”. Available

12/30/24 Ooh, a couple interesting new pieces taking shape in the studio. Stand by for updates...…

9/17/24 Check out this juicy, saturated vermillion on a #wip commission for a longtime collector. It’s created by brushing a very translucent Trans Red Oxide over Cad Red Light. Up close and in isolation it reads orange, but in the completed painting it reads a much deeper red. Stay tuned for the finished product...…

7/9/24 My favorite color for sky is this silvery blue-gray brushed over yellow ochre undercoat. I’m always alarmed on the first strokes that I’ve gone too gray, but the blue develops as I go. The golden undercoat gives some depth and to the large field of negative space sky. Image of the entire new piece coming soon!

7/2/24 Here is the freshly baked Wall/Floor, 2024. On 2 adjoined panels, the figures are repeated identically, but their different orientations suggest different realities. Hmm...rich with potential interpretations, no?

6/27/24 I’d like you to meet Simple Machines, 2024. This recently completed, large scale, text-based piece on panel deals with our most basic & deep-seated desires, fears, & motivations.…

5/9/24 Mixed this delicious berry colored translucent topcoat with a bit of metallic fleck & pearlex, and painted it in over a gold/ochre undercoat on a new #wip Sequence piece. Yum! Stay tuned for the completed work...……

4/29/24 Action on the new #wip text-based painting under way in the studio. Stand by...…

12/21/23 Strange how satisfying I find a well-built crate. This one recently carried 3 new paintings to @quidley_and_co in Naples.

10/18/23 Cutting in the surface layer on two new large-scale #poolpainting pieces. Stay tuned for the finished product!…

…

10/5/23 Starting off with a little pop of red always gets my juices flowing...…

…

9/27/23 Just finished fabbing a huge stack of new large-scale panels, including a 4x8’ multi-panel and a 3D one. Can’t wait to get painting! Watch this space...…

…

9/7/23 Introducing Sequence #9, 2023. Hard to capture the true dusky teal (a bit less green than you can see here), especially with its metallic sheen, but you can get the vibe of moving through the twilight. Stay tuned for a pro photo...…

8/15/23 As you can imagine, I spend a lot of time and energy mixing paint. Is it weird that I find it a soothing, zen activity? As various pigments, media, and additives are coming together, some pretty exciting visuals can appear...…

8/14/23 The brushy surface is still wet on the newly completed That Thing That Follows You #3, 2023, but wanted to take you on a tour. The right hand panel with the repeated figures is designed to either hang together, as you see here, or to turn the corner to hang connected on adjacent walls of an inside corner.

8/10/23 A trip down the length of the newly completed That Thing That Follows You #2, 2023. Enjoy the ride...…

8/8/23 Cutting in the silvery-sage surface layer on the #wip That Thing That Follows You #2, 2023.

3/27/23 Just completed Sequence #8, all dressed up in this silvery periwinkle. Hey, Poet & the Bench - coming your way!

7/18/23 After many months of loss, illness(es!), surgery, and other challenging distractions, I’m finally back in the studio, feeling good with a brush in my hand, collaborating with my old friend, Alizarin Crimson, on this #wip undercoat.

3/27/23 A couple new Sequence Series pieces under way in the studio. (Standy by, Poet + the Bench!)

3/9/22 This new Thread Series piece is underlaid with a photo I took of a phone pole on Capitol Hill Seattle. Thousands of staples on a pole always takes me back to my punk teens. Got a box of show flyers from those days - I'll post a few soon. Thread #70 (Gig Flyers), 2023, 12x16", Oil, Charcoal, & Inkjet on Arches Oil Paper. Available

11/15/22 Three sleeping women. New WIP pieces in the studio, all drawn in and ready for paint. Watch this space to see how they develop.

10/21/22 Pool #38, 2022 has a new home with a private collector in Nantucket! Huge thanks to Quidley & Co. for working their magic.

10/3/22 Just finished building these lovely blank panels. Such endless possibilities...

9/14/22 Fresh from the studio wall, here is Pool #39, 2022, 24x48", Oil & Charcoal on Panel. I love the simplicity, enhanced by the close cropping, plus the angles created by the figure's position.

9/9/22 Sequence #7, 2022, 24x48", Oil & Charcoal on Panel, brand new in the studio. The slaty blue adds to the mystery...

9/6/22 Fresh from the studio wall, Currents #5, 2022, 36x72", Oil & Charcoal on Panel. Sleeping figures continue to pop up in my work from time to time, as do botanical patterns like this kelp motif. (We can unpack that another time...)

8/22/22 Hair. Regardless of color, I let the brush do the talking. Here are the hair details from two work-in-progress paintings I'm working on in the studio. Lush, oily Trans Red Oxide over Ultramarine. Long brushstrokes indicate motion, layers, and volume.

8/4/22 Three new pieces underway, drawn in and ready for paint. Stay tuned...

7/17/22 Introducing Sequence #6, 2022, 60x12", Oil & Charcoal on Panel. I feel like the strong vertical orientation adds to the sensation of descent

7/6/22 Here's the newly completed Thread #68, 2022. 48x72", Oil & Charcoal on Wood Panel

...And again with the artist

...And here's a detail showing the lush brushwork

6/20/22 Studies A, B, & C for the work in progress Thread #68. The final version under way on wood panel, 4x6 ft. Stay tuned...

6/12/22 A couple sneak peek details of the work in progress, Sequence #6. Do not adjust your set...

6/2/22 It's said that every work is a self-portrait, but just in case, here's me with Pool #38, 2022

46/2/22 Just completed in the studio, Pool #38, 2022, 48x72", Oil & Charcoal on Panel. The largest of this series to date, it will be heading to Quidley & Co. in Nantucket.

4/29/22 Two new small Thread Series pieces, fresh from the studio wall. My traditional oil and charcoal figure, obscured by the thread form, revealing the printed backing image from my rainy photographs. Both 12x16" overall, on Arches Oil Paper.

4/29/22 ...And here's an interesting detail, showing the lush brushwork and rainy photo background.

4/5/22 Here's the completed Thread Series piece, Ravel, 2022, fresh in the studio - 49x49" (2 panels), Oil & Charcoal on Wood Panel. Feels like a merging of the Thread Series with my main body of work.

3/29/22 Just moments ago I completed Thread #65 (Field III), 2022, 24x36", Oil & Charcoal on Aluminum Panel. Watch how it changes with the viewer's position, thanks to the frosty reflextivity of the metal ground and the super-translucent painted surface.

...Here's a still, as well. The background image is derived from an altered found photograph of a group. of children posing in a field. My guess is Depression Era.

...And an interesting detail, showing the brushwork and metal surface with blurred photographic image.

3/24/22 Here's the brand new Chaise #31, 2022, still drying on the studio wall. 24x36", Oil & Charcoal on Panel

3/21/22 Introducing Pool #35, 2022, 24x36", Oil & Charcoal on Panel, fresh from the studio. Catcha' just smell the linseed oil?

3/18/22 These 3 brand new Pool Series pieces are on their way to Quidley & Co., just in time for the upcoming Nantucket season opener. From top to bottom, they are: Chaise #29, Chaise #30, and Pool #34, all 2022, 12x48", oil & charcoal on panel.

2/3/22 Prepping two new Pool Series pieces. These are going to be cool!

2/27/22 A new WIP piece nearing completion. Looking like an exciting combination of the Thread Series and my main body of work.

1/27/22 A new WIP piece nearing completion. Looking like an exciting combination of the Thread Series and my main body of work.

...Cutting in over the contrasting undercoat. Stay tuned....

12/30/21 Great to close out the year with a sale! This painting, Chaise #12, 2014, foound a new home with a collector in the Southeast. Thanks to Poest & the Bench for making it happen!

12/15/21 Seven of those panels, all laid in and ready for paint. Stay tuned...

12/10/21 Few things more enticing than a wall full of blank prepared panels, ready for what comes next. Watch this space to see what develops...

12/8/21 After struggling with signatures and how they can complicate composition, I settled early in my career on stamping my name and date on the face of the artwork. I use a set of key stamps I got as a gift decades ago. I discovered this one imprinted accidentally on my work table (with added rubbing for visibility.)

11/19/21 One of the first “Pool Paintings” has found its forever home with a South Florida collector. I’ve always really loved this one, Pool #2, 2009, and am so glad to see it in such a great spot! Thanks to Quidley& Co. in Naples for the great work!

11/19/21 Seeing through another man’s glasses -… Another sneak peek at a new artwork created especially for Context Art Miami. I’ll be showing with Quidley & Co. I’ll be there in person- let me know if you’ll be, too!

11/12/21 Premiering something super-cool at Context Miami this year. Here’s a glimpse to whet your appetite...

11/7/21 Just got this installation view pic from a longtime collector, with their new copy of The Pessimists. That’s An Alternate, 2013 on the right, and Nearly There, 2013, a commissioned custom TV enclosure, on the left.

11/6/21 Installation view of Thread #8 (Song for the Soil), 2019, 22x30”, Oil & Inkjet on Paper, in a Bay Area collector’s home. Thanks to my dealer, Poet & the Bench!

10/1/21 Anyone who’s visited my studio has been met with this sight. Scores of jars of mixed oil paint colors in various formulations - undercoats, topcoats, glazes, etc. Most are in bouillon jars, a few in artichoke heart jars, and even a couple still around in baby food jars, all dated. That Sap Green in the lower right is from 2014! When I’m working, you’ll see me at the panel, holding one of these in my left hand, a brush in my right, and a rag (usually a sock) over my shoulder.) If you close your eyes, you can smell the turp and linseed - aahhhh...…

9/29/21 You’ve seen studies and earlier versions on paper. Now here’s Thread #61 (Notebook IV), 2021, 24x36”, Oil & Inkjet on Aluminum Panel. I’ve also thrown in a detail and a W.I.P. shot for your edification and enjoyment. The underlying image is an altered found photo of a group of figures - you can make out two male figures in profile (center and right,) and a facing female figure in front of a structure (left.) Available.

9/23/21 The latest Thread Series piece, fresh from the studio: Thread #60 (On Final Approach L.A. II), 2021, 22x30”, Oil and Inkjet on Paper. I love the washy silver over the blown and blurred L.A. city lights. More to follow... Available.…

9/21/21 Look what just arrived on my doorstep! My very own copy of The Pessimists by the amazing @bethany.a.ball, with cover art by yours truly. Looks fantastic, and can’t wait to read it!…

9/14/21 Check out Thread #59 (On Final Approach L.A. I), 2021, 22x30”, Oil & Inkjet on Paper, with a mirrored Thread Series form over an altered found photograph of Los Angeles from the air. Digging it. More to follow... Available.… …

9/13/21 Here are the newly completed Thread #57 & #58, I Remember Rain I & II, 2021, 12x16”, Oil & Inkjet on Paper, utilizing the familiar Thread Series looping forms over my own rainy photo images. Feels like patterns drawn with your finger in a fogged-up car window. Larger versions coming soon... Available.…

9/8/21 On final descent... a sneak peek at the latest Thread Series piece. Watch this space...…

8/30/21 A pair of new W.I.P Thread Series pieces under way in the studio. Zoom in closer to get a good look at the looping thread pattern over my rainy photo images. Mmm, rain. Stay tuned...…

8/24/21 Fresh from the studio wall, here are Thread #55 (Substation II), & Thread #54 (Substation I), 2021, 12x16”, Oil & Inkjet on Paper. Fascinated by the impossible tangle of lines & insulators, technology that hasn’t substantially changed in 100 years, and even more so by the thought of all that is happening both upstream and down from that station. See below to see the luscious deep eggplant color in the detail. Available.

8/11/21 Don’t bother notifying @potus, but I’m getting in on the whole infrastructure thing. Check out these two W.I.P. Thread Series pieces, employing the familiar looping forms over a couple of my altered substation photographs. Stay tuned...…

8/7/21 Just learned that Shift #2, 2016 has found a new home! So pleased, as it is one of my all-time favorites. Big thanks to Chris Quidley and Adam Sodofsky at Quidley & Co. in Nantucket for their hard work!

8/6/21 Love this deep slate blue in the brand new Thread #52 (Notebook III), 2021, 22x30", Oil & Inkjet on Paper. Background image is from a found vintage photograph. Available.

7/14/21 The latest Thread Series piece, fresh from the studio, with WIP to the right. Introducing Thread #51 (Exodus), 2021, 12x12", Oil on Vintage Album Cover (record included). Available. The original Ernest Gold soundtrack from the 1960 film. Calls up social and geopolitical issue for me. It's complicated...

6/23/21 Got some stuff to see and discuss at the open houseat my Fairfax studio tomorrow evening, 6/24, 5-8pm. Come on by! 48B Bolinas Rd. (Enter around back on Bank St.)

6/14/21 After thirty+ years of artmaking, I figure I've missed my chance at a successful hand-modeling career. Lots of wear and tear. #Battlescars

6/9/21 Last month, I posted pics from the studio of Thread #42 & #43 (BlueAlmostBlack II & III), 2021. I've been staring at them for the last few weeks, and was unhappy with the field color, which lacked the magic of deep black, while not quite reading as blue. Today, I reworked that field color with a thin glaze of Interference Blue, and it came alive. Check out these details - the pigment irridesces, shifting between electric and nearly invisible, depending on the light and position of the eye - like a butterfly wing. Digging it. Available

6/8/21 Wow, I'm just so electrified by this WIP Thread Series album cover piece I'm working on for a commission. The mirrored random thread pattern across the double cover takes on a formal aspect - like a crest or Moorish motif.

6/7/21 Here are new versions of two recent Thread Seriies pieces, exploring the ratio of visibility/concealment of the background image. Thread #47 (Field II), 2021, and Thread #48 (Notebook II), 2021, both 22x30", Oil & Inkjet on Paper. Available

5/28/21 A Cast of Thousands! The latest Thread Series album cover piece is Thread #47 (Khartoum), 2021, on an original 1966 soundtrack album cover for the Heston/Olivier epic. Looking closely, you can make out Heston as the heroic anglo, and Olivier as the evil Arab. (Jeez, you gotta love the sixties.) Includes the LP. And check out the WIP shots, too. Available

5/27/21 Introducing Thread #46 (Zhivago), 2021, plus four WIP captures. The latest Thread Series painting on vintage album cover - this one featuring the original soundtrack from Doctor Zhivago. It includes all the original liner notes and LP's (still in fine shape at 57 years old!). Available

5/24/21 It's only Monday, and shaping up to be a great art week! This piece, Negation: Conditional #2, 2017, 30x40", Oil & Charcoal on Panel, has found a new home with a Bay Area collector. Thanks to Poet and/the Bench for the sale!

5/24/21 I'm pleased to tell you that this piece, Chaise #18, 2015, is on its way to a new home in San Diego. Thanks to Elisa Contemporary Art for the sale from the "A Glimpse Ahead" show in Westport, CT!

5/20/21 Here is the shiny new Thread #41 (Crowd Dynamics IV), 2021, with its friend Thread #33 (Crowd Dynamics III), 2021 above. Both 22x30", Oil & Inkjet on Paper. Available.

5/17/21 I'm extremely excited about these two large-scale metal prints I just received! That satin-y aluminum finish is so delicious with the blurred vintage photo imagery. I can't wait to give them the Thread Series treatment - stay tuned!

5/11/21 Thought you might be interested in seeing the finished, unmasked, Thread #44 (Notebook), 2021, 12x16", Oil & Inkjet on Paper. The background image is an altered found vintage photograph - my best guess is late "40's. Available.

5/3/21 Four WIP views of the newest Thread Series piece, making use of an altered found photo of a huge crowd. 22x30", oil & inkjet on oil paper.

4/30/21 A studio update on work in progress Thread #44 (Notebook), with a couple views and a detail. Making use of an altered found vintage photograph. 12x16", oil and inkjet on oil paper. Stay tuned for the completed piece!

4/16/21 Now complete, introducing Thread #45 (Field), 2021, 16x12", Oil & Inkjet on Paper. Available.

3/18/21 Three stages of WIP and a detail for the new Thread Series piece, plus a detail - Thread #45 (Field), 2021, employing altered imagery from a found vintage photograph. This one is 12x16" inches on oil paper, but I'm planning a larger version on aluminum panel. Can't you just see it?

3/15/21 The next Thread Series piece under way, using an altered found vintage photograph. Click the pic to see the looping form laid in and ready for paint. Stay tuned... Thread #44 (Notebook), 2021

3/11/21 WIP Thread #42 & 43 (BlueAlmostBlack II & III), 2021, captured in the studio in just their gold undercoats - scandalous! Watch this space for the finished versions...

1/13/20 Nostalgic in image and palette in the latest Thread Series study. Under image is from a found vintage photograph of a family posing on a bridge circa 1920's. I wonder what paths brought them to and from this captured moment. Thread #17 (Bridge), 2020, 16x12", Oil and Inkjet on Paper. Available

1/7/20 For any doubters, a little evidence that I paint these Thread Series pieces without masking (except for the borders, of course)
